The back end of the Eastern Conference playoff spots is very tightly contested; a welcome change from most other areas of the NHL standings. The Flyers, Canadiens and Bruins hold the last three positions, each with 82 points and five games remaining. The tiebreaking procedures gives Philadelphia a huge edge over Boston with three more wins total, but a tough final week could be deadly if they don’t play right. They’ll get their chance to start the end right tonight when they welcome those Canadiens.

There’s been a lot of talk in the last year about the Phoenix Coyotes moving back to Winnipeg from whence they came; some of it legit, some hopeful ramblings. It seems we’re talking about the former again as Jerry Reinsdorf’s name is once again in the mix as a potential purchaser of the franchise, this time with an out clause that will allow him to move the team. Winnipeg is being named as a potential city to relocate.

Before last night’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes, Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault announced that defenseman Shane O’Brien will not be playing or practicing with the Canucks until Sunday at the earliest. Some thought the reason for his benching was because he showed up late to practice on Monday, but Vigneault says the issues extend further back. He’s being given some time to think about his attitude and behavior in recent weeks, then the Canucks will reevaluate the situation and determine if O’Brien is fit for the lineup.

Jays win, Halladay loses…not your typical headline

The Blue Jays got their first taste of an opposing Roy Halladay on Wednesday when they made the short trip from Dunedin to Bright House Field in Clearwater. The Jays showed their appreciation for Halladay and his new Philly uniform by swatting balls left and right, touching up the ace starter for four runs in the first inning alone. However, Halladay was able to pick himself up in the show why he’s one of the best by striking out three batters in the second.

Ben Zobrist is every coach’s almost-dream player. He plays a number of positions, can hit for power, and isn’t afraid to take a walk. His average and speed leave something to be desired, but for the man nicknamed “Zorilla” by Tampa Bay coach Joe Madden, Zobrist’s skill set is everything to be desired in a player who wears the name “Rays” across his chest. At 28 years old, Zobrist enters the 2010 season with the Rays with high hopes and even higher expectations.

The Los Angeles Kings’ freefall continues. They dropped their fourth straight game on Monday; third straight in regulation, losing to Minnesota 3-2. The last time they got a point was a 4-3 shootout loss to Colorado. Since the Olympic break, the Kings are 5-7-2, which has seriously hurt their playoff positioning and with seven games left in the regular season, some are beginning to wonder if they’ll be able to hold on to their playoff spot.

Youthful Avalanche trying to turn around misfortunes
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,
The Colorado Avalanche have got young and got good. After missing the playoffs last season and not advancing past the second round since 2002, the Avs are in the final stages of a rebuild and may squeeze themselves into the playoffs, currently holding on to the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference, but they do have some breathing room between them and Calgary. They’re also only five points back of third place, so things are still very much up in the air for Colorado.

Chad Gaudin will be moving clear across the country. After being released by the New York Yankees on Thursday, the right-handed pitcher reached an agreement with Oakland worth $700K. Gaudin, who was primarily a starter with the Yankees in 2009 will likely end up as part of the A’s bullpen as many of their current hurlers are sidelined with various injuries. This is a good pickup for the A’s as Gaudin can be used as both a starter and reliever, based on where he’s needed most.
